Mario García-Carrasco graduated from medicine and surgery at the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla, México. He trained as a resident of rheumatology at the Centro Nacional de Lucha contra Enfermedades Reumáticas in Barcelona. He then performed research in rheumatology for 3 years at the Hospital Lariboisiére in París, France.

Through the Universidad Autónoma de Puebla he obtained a scholarship to obtain his masters and doctorate degrees at the Hospital Clínic in Barcelona and obtained a PhD in 1997 from the Universidad de Barcelona with the doctoral thesis: Viral, hormonal and immunomodulatory factors in the ethiopathogenesis of primary Sjögren's syndrome. Since 1986 he is the head research professor of Rheumatology and Immunology at the Faculty of Medicine of the Benemérita Universidad Autónoma de Puebla. He is currently the head of the Systemic Autoimmune Disease Unit at the Hospital General Regional número 36 of the Instituto Mexicano del Seguro Social. He belongs to the National Researchers System of México, attaining the top level, level III.
